The annual Día de los Muertos event served up exceptional trail conditions to all who attended. A great turnout of 32 riders tallied an impressive 101 runs on the classic downhill course. The studiously groomed track served up fast and flowly runs. On track was a radar speed trap and digital display, clocking riders down one of the final straight and steep chutes. Many riders were consistently coming through at 30+mph with Vincent Kimber dropping in the high speed of the day at the trap with 37 mph! Weather cooperated and clear skies rewarded the event with great temperatures and just enough sunshine.

On a mission for most laps was Michael Chapman who set a new high mark for Los Muertos Enduro laps with 7 on the day! Chapman would put down successive laps multiple times without even stopping at the bottom, recording a sub 37 minute lap on the mountain while he was at it, and vastly improving his descent time in the process. For the ladies Hollie Ernest and Natalie Morris would each turn in four laps while each getting faster every lap! It was great to see so many of the riders improve their times throughout the day, as the bar crept up run after run.

In the master’s field, Shaun Fyfe would ride three consistent runs to take the master’s win by a combined 12 seconds. Battling for second place, Geoff Hales would jump out to an early lead on friend Tom Phillips, only to see Phillips log his fastest run of the day on his final lap pulling into a dead tie with Hales for second place! Sean Storment would be third, only a combined 8 seconds back across the 3 runs on Phillips and Hales. Gary Sauer was fourth a combined 18 seconds back off second place and Mike Clem in fifth only a combined 35 seconds off second place on a borrowed bike that was too small for him.

The women’s field saw Hollie Ernest improve every run over four runs to take the victory over local shredder Stacey Purifoy who finished second with three very consistent runs improving all the way through and only finishing a combined 33 seconds behind Ernest. Natalie Morris would come in third. Ernest praised the format as one of her favorites, as she relished the low pressure opportunity to dial in her descending on the high speed track.

Amidst 17 riders in the senior men’s field, last year’s winner Eric Geist would jump out to an early lead on run one with a 4:44. Geist held the hotseat as he improved his time on run two to a 4:40. Geist would hold this position until Dylan Fluet edged him by one second on his second run with a 4:39. From here the fastest run time continued to drop as riders got acclimated to the high speeds of Tish Tang. After crashing while riding blind on his first Tish Tang run ever, Vincent Kimber would be the next to take the fast run hot seat, edging Fluet by another second with a 4:38 on his second attempt. After timing the first runs of the day Justin Graves would gear up, borrow a rear brake and take fast time on his first go with a 4:32. Kimber would manage to tie the 4:32 on his final run while contenders Eric Geist, Steve Pearl, Nick Rossow and Dylan Fluet would all stay in contact with fast runs of their own all below the 4:40 mark. Graves’ second run would see the fast run creep further down to a 4:31. With other riders on their final fourth or fifth laps of the day as Graves headed up for his third and final run, a consistent time would see him take the overall lead.

“I wasn’t going to try to go faster on the final run because I didn’t want to make any mistakes, but as soon as I was in the first turn the traction was so good and everything felt automatic so I turned it up a bit more and all the sections just came together really well. Such a fun feeling.”

With other competitors slowing slightly on their final runs as the sun began to set, Graves would again improve his time on his third descent, knocking it down to a 4:26. Eric Geist would finish in second, 21 seconds back on the combined 13:29 of Graves. Times were very tight through the field. Completing five laps Steve Pearl took third, his last three laps of the day were his fastest. Pearl would finish a combined 9 seconds off Geist. Nick Rossow would be fourth only one second combined off Pearl, and Dylan Fluet finished in fifth just two seconds combined off Rossow!

What a day! No one got seriously hurt. Unfortunately Denny Snyder would not be able to finish after a fast start due to a foot jam on track, but we think he will live to race another day.
