RESULTS – SDES #4 – Escape from Jacoby Creek Enduro

The fourth and final round of the 2017 Super Duper Enduro Series pitted riders against the precipitation that Humboldt County is known for. The otherwise sunny ride series was capped off with the Escape from Jacoby Creek Enduro, through the December dampness of Arcata’s Jacoby Creek Watershed. Ride series regulars and new comers amassed at the top of our coastal mount known as Kneeland to begin a day that would deliver them back to sea level through a variety of diverse stages. Entering the final round of the best 3 out of 4 ride series, points leaders Steven Pearl and Justin Graves were essentially tied, each having one win and one second place finish. Since Pearl had missed round 2, he would need to finish second or better to best Graves best three finishes with two seconds and a first from rounds 1,2 and 3 respectively. Ryan Reichlin sat in a close third followed by his other local competition at all four rounds Denny Snyder and Trevur Keyes. Local talent was met with some solid competition from a visiting contingent of Redding riders, including the winner of round 3 at Tish Tang Eric Geist, who returned to try his hand against local advantage again.

Rain during the prior week had slickened the trails and swollen the creek. With more rain forecast throughout Saturday riders arrived prepared for wintry conditions. Stage 1 sent riders down the upper portion of the Red Gate trail to the Blue Bridge. Rain was holding off as participants started down the fast double track stage. Red Gate’s high speed water bar descending was interspersed with tiring punchy climbs that made Stage 1 as much about pedaling power as it was about flat out speed in the open sections. Despite riding the stage blind, visiting rider Eric Geist would post the fastest time, powering through the stage in five minutes 43 seconds. Close on his heels, though benefitted by local advantage were Ryan Reichlin in 2nd and Justin Graves in 3rd who each came in on five minutes 46 seconds. Steve Pearl finished fourth on five minutes 48 seconds while the 26” downhill bike riding Daniel Hacking would position himself well on the pedally stage managing a 5th place finishing on five minutes 56 seconds. Riders next ascended the Red Gate climb to Stage 2 on the Fern Trail. The extremely tight, twisty and ferny Fern Trail stood in stark contrast to Stage 1’s high speed open sections. With most riders unfamiliar with the tight and tricky trail, local Ryan Reichlin would take his first stage win of the series and a solid time lead over his rivals finishing in four minutes nine seconds despite laying his bike down in the first turn as he rocketed out of the gate. Justin Graves would come the closest to his time finishing in 2nd with a time of four minutes and thirteen seconds, just a fraction ahead of the blind riding Geist who took third on four minutes fourteen seconds, moving him further yet in front of Pearl who lost seven seconds on the stage to the visiting Geist. Hacking would again surprise on his DH bike managing to slip into 4th position on the tight stage with a time of four minutes and sixteen seconds.

Entering the second half of the day Ryan Reichlin held a narrow 2.7 second lead over Eric Geist and 5 second lead over Justin Graves, with Steve Pearl 14 seconds back in 4th and Hacking establishing himself in 5th only 18 seconds off the leader. Stage 3 took the field up to Mud Pup, a technical and rooty trail that challenged riders’ control and courage in the slippery conditions. Reichlin would continue on his roll dominating the stage and further extending his lead finishing Mud Pup in three minutes. To the astonishment of many the blind sender Eric Geist would manage 2nd on the trail only eight seconds off Reichlin, putting the riders into a two man dual heading into the final stage. Daniel Hacking continued his surprising performance taking 3rd on the Pup just a fraction ahead of Pearl in 4th. Series leader Justin Graves could not match Geist’s blind riding magic, losing major time on his rivals in his first run ever down the Pup. Graves would lose 24 seconds to Reichlin and was all but out of the running for the day. Other series contenders Denny Snyder and Trevur Keyes were sitting well back from the leader at this point as well with Snyder posting his best stage result with a 6th on Stage 2, while Keyes found form on Mud Pup posting a 5th place.

Round 4 would conclude on the steepest and most rugged stage of the day, Pampas. Known as a downhill trail, Stage 4 would push riders through steeps and features made all the more challenging by the steadily increasing rainfall which had begun lightly during Stage 2 and had continued to pickup. At the start of Stage 4 Reichlin held a solid 11 second lead over 2nd place Geist, 12:55 to 13:06. Steven Pearl would be battling for a series winning position sitting a good measure back on 13:19, with Hacking holding a two second lead over Graves, 13:23 to 13:25. Geist finally found the limits of his blind riding abilities on the black diamond trail, managing just a 6th place on the stage, opening the door for his competition. In his element, DH bike riding Daniel Hacking would grab second position despite going off trail with a ripping two minute 34 second run giving him his best stage position of the day and besting the round leader Reichlin who would finish 3rd in two minutes 37 seconds. Graves would have a solid run finishing 4th with a two minute 39 second run time, though it would not be enough to advance him in the day’s standings. Trevur Keyes would round out the top 5 on the stage, continuing his strong riding through the afternoon. Last down the hill, and in pursuit of the overall title, Steve Pearl would find his form for the final stage, posting the fastest Stage 4 time of two minutes and 31 seconds. However the strong run would be just 1.6 seconds shy of overtaking Geist on the day, placing Pearl in 3rd on the day and 2nd in the series.

Ryan Reichlin took the day in decisive fashion, his first win of the series, beating out the hard charging Eric Geist in 2nd. Pearl would reside in 3rd and Daniel Hacking would impress all by snagging 4th on his big bike, pushing Graves into 5th on the day. Thus the overall, best 3 of 4 event, series ended as such; Graves would hold onto the lead retaining a 2nd, 2nd, and 1st from rounds 1,2 and 3. Pearl would grab 2nd with his 1st, 2nd, and 3rd from rounds 1,3 and 4. Ryan Reichlin would take 3rd on his 3rd, 3rd and 1st from rounds 1,2 and 4. To the surprise of many Eric Geist would insert himself into the top five, although only riding two events with his 1st and 2nd in rounds 2 and 4. 5th overall was claimed by Denny Snyder thanks to his 4th, 4th and 8th from rounds 1, 2 and 4. What a ride this series has been, a fantastic sampling of the diversity of Humboldt County trails and conditions. Thanks to all who came out and helped make this reality more fun. I know I feel a better and faster rider for it, we hope you do too.

RESULTS – SDES #3 – MacDuro – McKinleyville Nov. 18th, 2017

Dave Aumentado rips into the final corner of stage 2, TechnologyOnce again the SDES was graced with good weather for Round #3 in McKinleyville California. Heavy rains through the prior week presented very slippery trails for the Macduro riders. Saturday’s sunshine only seemed to exacerbate the already slippery conditions, as successive runs created packed slippery turns and deathly slick roots. Many riders found themselves careening off course or quickly hitting the deck before they had time to react. Round 3 sported the biggest turnout yet for the 2017 series and many riders got to sample the fun and challenging Mac trails for their first time. Short and technical stages challenged riders to push their pace while minimizing mistakes, before finishing the day on the epic, long and physical run down TV, aka Jude’s Trail. The conditions saw many an order mixup as participants pushed their luck against the clock. Local favorite Noah Samson threw down at his first SDES appearance on his home trails. Consistently riding his way to third on the day, Samson split the  favorites for the series overall podium widening the gap between the series leaders and runners up. Tyler Green also laid down some hot stage times in his SDES debut. Though hampered by mechanicals and navigation issues, Green would take a third on stage 2 and a second place on stage 5, showing the leaders he had the pace to hang. Joel Graves returned to the series on his home town trails after missing round 2, and would post an impressive fourth place on stage 4, but was beset by major offs in other runs that would bury him in the field. Trevur Keyes had his best performance of the series to date, landing in a solid fourth place on the day, narrowly ahead of close rivals Ryan Reichlin in fifth and Denny Snyder, who would fall to tenth on the day after being penalized 30 seconds for cutting the course on the final stage. In the masters field Mike Clem rode a strong round to finish eighth overall, distancing himself further from close rivals Travis James, Curt Reichlin and Justin Brown.

Kira Rose returned to the series and would ride all stages impressively for her first time on the Mac trails claiming another round of first place points in the women’s field. Ali Osgood amazed aboard a slick tired, one brake, dirt jumper. And Stacey Purifoy had a consistent day on her hardtail in her first visit to Mactown.

All eyes were on the battle for senior men series overall with Steve Pearl returning to the series after missing round 2. After winning round 1 at Lacks Creek, Pearl had an opportunity to distance himself from close rival and comrade Justin Graves who finished in second place at both rounds 1 and 2. The two riders would battle through all 6 stages, trading the lead a total of four times before the day was done. A timing error on stage 1 saw Graves have to perform a rerun within minutes of his first go. Despite the winded frenzy of the second attempt Graves would manage to edge Pearl in rounds 1 and 2, building a very slim 1.7 second lead. With pressure mounting Pearl delivered on the long and technical stage 3, edging Graves by four seconds and taking over the lead by 2.5 seconds. Graves would answer back taking the win on the short and intense stage 4 by a fat 3.0 seconds, with Pearl blowing off course two turns from the finish, again giving Graves a narrow advantage of only 0.5 seconds. The back and forth continued with Graves throwing a chain half way through the shredful stage 5 known as Car Crash. Graves managed to avoid total disaster salvaging the run and preserving the chain, coasting into third position with Pearl taking another impressive stage win and reclaiming the lead by a familiar 1.7 second advantage. The round would be decided on the final stage. Graves descended first and put together a strong run that would only be tested by Pearl. However it was not Steve’s day as a wipeout and run in with a motorcycle on course would stall his run and give Graves the margin needed for a solid victory as Pearl fell 12.8 seconds short of all but clinching the series overal, leaving the two tied with a round win and round second place apiece.
